Rockledge, you say you use Mobile1 Synthetic ATF in your PS system. Are Mobile ATF and standard PS fluid miscible? Or do you need a complete drain down to put in the ATF?

Mobil1 ATF is fully compatible with the fluid that's in your PS sytem right now. It's probably best to remove as much of the old PS fluid as you can in order to get the most benefit from the new synthetic fluid, but if you don't get all of the old stuff out, that will not be a problem.

Shuddering on your vehicle is most likely caused from air trapped in the system. It can be a bear to get it out. Some vehicles I have to use tools to hook up a vacuum pump to remove the air. But, here's how I do it most of the time. Start your vehicle, turn the wheel from full right to full left several times, end with wheels to the right, shut off your vehicle, leave set for approx. 5 min., restart and turn to the left, shut it off for approx 5 min., restart, turn wheel several times to both full stops, center the wheel and shut off, leave set for approx 5-10 min. This usually does the trick but, sadly not always. Good luck!

I had problems with noise and hard steering. The only thing that fixed it was to turn the wheel and fill the reservoir with the engine running. For my 78 4x4 turning the wheel empties the reservoir and it sucks air, which causes the fluid to foam and then pour out everywhere. Filling the reservoir with the engine on as my assistant turned the wheel was the only solution (Other that a very expensive power fulsh from the dealer). I tried everything else first, with fluid everywhere as the result.

Hello,

Well it's been a week since I changed out the PS lines and did the original flush and fill. I added a bottle of Lucas (Rockledge) and purged the system (ranger88a). I also sacrificed a live chicken over my PS system as I saw this method prescribed in another forum. I did not yet try the Mobil 1 synthetic (I am still running Type F in the system).

My PS system has quieted down substantially and I mean it is MUCH quieter even parked at full lock. I'm not sure which "cure" worked but I'd suggest it was the chicken. Either way I would recommend trying the Lucas and the purge technique described. It worked for me.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Gil

Glad to hear about the improvement in your power steering system. And great tip regarding the chicken, I'm going to make a mental note of that one...

If the live chicken works that well I wonder what kind of effect a live virgin would have? There aren't any in my town so I guess I'll never find out.
