I have a '99 4x4 Ranger, 3.0 automatic. I would like to replace the 235/75r15 tires with 31x10.5's. I was wondering how much of a power loss I should expect. The truck has 4.10 gears.
with the 4.10 gears you probably wont loss much power crusing down the highway but around town you will notice quite a difference. you will probably loss about 100-200 rpms going down the highway
Should be fine with 4.10's. My 4.0L has 3.73's with 31's, it's geared too high. Shouldn't be bad enough that you can't stand it, and it will look MUCH better
Just remember that any time you go to a taller tire, you raise your gearing. The engine will have to work harder to get the rest of the driveline turning. The more low end torque you have, the less you will notice this. In other words, it will be more apparent with a 3.0L than a 4.0L. The only solution to this is to re-gear the differential with a lower gear set.
Also, remember that this will throw your speedometer (and odometer) off. It may be reading 65 going down the road, but you may be going faster in reality (as in when being clocked by a trooper). If you do upgrade to a larger tire without a spedometer correction, find out the percentage that it is off and figure out the actual speeds at normal highway postings versus your speedo.
