Overdrive switch on automatic shifter broke

Overdrive switch on automatic shifter broke

I know I'm not the only one that rests their hand on the end of the shifter while adjusting the radio. It's just in a perfect place for it. Well, enough was enough and the plastic grooved overdrive switch on the end of the shifter shaft broke off. Now it dangles down with wires attached. I'm getting ready to try super glue as a quick fix until I can replace it. Ford wanted about $200. Thought I would just go to a pull-a-part place and get a whole new shifter with overdrive control attached. Anybody know the details on changing one out yourself?? Thanks.

happened to my 94 250sd diesel auto. bought stalk and switch etc. cost as i remember less than $50 from ford, had local mechanic shop install less than $50. joe

2000 Ford Excursion LTD 4x4 PSD. My dad's 96 PSD F250 has the same exact shifter, so I didn't include my vehicle specs. It appears that most if not all Super Duty trucks with overdrive have the same shifter as mine. As for the steering column, I assume that it is just a standard X LTD column. I have rear/front wiper control arm/blinker, tilt, and shifter. Let me know if anything else is needed. Thanks for helping.

To JOEDEPILOT, thanks for the info. The reason I wanted to try and change it myself (if not too hard) is that there is less and less that an owner can do anymore without going to the shop. I like the feeling of accomplishment when I can steal money away from Ford LABOR when it's something I can do myself. Don't get me wrong, I didn't touch my Tranny when it went out at 36,016 miles (out of warranty by 16 miles). My wallet is still trying to recoup from that one.

just remembered the reson it was cheap to install was because he did not have to remove wheel. couln't be too hard to do yourself. i was just too lazy.
