I am going to be replacing the shift lever on my friend's truck soon. Its the automatic overdrive one on the column. The end of his broke off. I had mine off years ago to replace the boot, but can't remember what size the little bolt is. Also how does the OD button come off the end of the staulk. The new one didn't come with that, so we are reusing it. Does anyone know what size the little bolt is and what all tools I should have handy when I go to his place to do it? I remember being able to do it with just taking the upper and lower shroud/cover loose and not having to remove the ignition lock cylinder.
I don't remember what holds it in. If it is a roll pin, how does it come out? So, you think its more of a slide mechanism? Can you say anything else about it?
What about removing the OD button, does it just pop out?
If you take a pocket knife and judiciously pry the outer cap from around the OD button it comes off. Then they light and switch slide out with the smooth plastic face where it would light up the word 'off'.
Hope that helps, good luck!
You drive out the roll pin and remove the entire lever. There will be a very small wire coming out of the end of it that you need to unplug. On your truck you must remove the 2-piece shroud that goes around the steering column I believe.

The shroud is a simple thing to remove...A couple screws and VOILA!...
The issue I have found is the silver piece that your key fits into....Once its off...Its off....Any idea on how to reattach it?
It's easier just to take out the whole key cylinder. Put the key in, turn it to the 'on' position, then use a punch to release the cylinder through the hole on the underside of the column. If you already took the silver piece off I have no idea if you can put it back on. When I took mine apart it looked like it was made to be permanently attached to the cylinder.
I believe you can replace the top plastic part without removing the shift lever. The very top bezel that goes around the button snaps in place and then the rest of the **** is held on with a snap ring I believe.
