More Timing woes!

I still can not get my timing right. When I set it to how I like it the next day it will start to ping again. Is there something on my 88 302 that could cause it to keep throwing it out of time?

How many miles on engine, kam? May well be tired, loose timing chain/gear if lots of miles.

No it only has 92,000 original. Would a loose timing chain cause that?

It certainly sounds like you have some timing chain issues here Kam. Have you pulled the timing cover?

No, I have not. I was hoping that it was something simple but it looks like it is not. Am I right? If I do what should I look for? How much play? Does anyone make timing gears instead of a chain for broncos? Thanks
Oh yeah, would a knock sensor cause this?

Well I believe there are two orientation points on the two sprockets, to keep them in line. I know many of the major cam manufacturers (as well as FRPP I think) make timing gears. I just dont know if they make them for your particular application. I dont think a knock sensor would cause this. It sounds like your problem is mechanical in nature.

So is it pretty hard to get to the timing chain? I am going to have to find my manual and see. What usually needs to be removed?

"Hard" is a relative term . I would assume you will need to remove the belt assembly, the fan, and maybe some hoses if need be. For a more definitive answer, you might want to ask the guys over in the 351W forum.

Ya that is what I thought too. I only have a 302 so I will just look it up in the old repair manual. Thanks for all the help though!

Well if you look in my Gallery I put up some pics of my timing chain process so far. I figure I will replace the water pump and thermostate why I am at it. Anything else I should replace too?

Kam,

I recently started experiencing the ping on the new engine...and upon inspection I realized that the dist was loose....after tightening it
the timing was still off....

I forgot to put the truck into neutral..when pulling the bridge connector...
THEN..you can set timing....on the warm engine.

Once I did this..the ping stopped and I added 2 degrees onto my timing...the truck pulls hard....lit em up today on the parking lot @ work....could have kept them spinning but gas is pricey

cheers

Really? My manual says that the truck can be in park if an automatic when I check the timing.

Kam,

If your vehicle is EFI AND Automatic..then I suggest applying the parking brake, chocking the wheels and proceeding with the SOP for setting the timing....

warm the truck up to operating temps...watch for movement of coolant with the rad cap off....

then unplug the bridge cap from the dist...set your timing gun up...
and set timing according to spec.

Once timng is set turn truck off put back into park. ...torque the dist down....and replug the dist bridge harness and get ready to take her for a drive...

I overlookd the neutral trans while setting timing part and got ping no matter what I did....as it turns out, in park...the trans presents a load onto the ECU....shifting into drive with the brakes on and you will feel the tug....

so....

go and try it...

Ping will disappear..
