thanks all
If you just want to start over, wipe the whole hard drive and install win2k then you don't need fdisk. Just boot from the win2000 CD and there will be an option to reformat the current partition (or delete and create a new partition).

It's actually not that hard, if you're looking to delete the patition then recreate it, just boot to DOS type fdisk at the command prompt delete the partition, then create a partition and everything will be whiped clean. There will be nothing to boot to when you reboot, so make sure that you have a boot disk at that point.

Check if the 2000CD is an "Upgrade".
The easiest way is Boot from The 2000CD & do the re-partitioning / formatting from it. MicroSoft, upgrades require an existing O/S on the machine so if you wipe it off with Fdisk, you may be in for more work (reinstall 98, then upgrade again) than
needed. Realize that either way you lose all what was on the disk drive when you
re-partition / reformat. Good luck !

Instead of the f-disk, your bios may have a feature called a low-level format.
That'll take care of whatever's there, but I havent seen it in the bios since I had a 486. Take a look see, at any rate.

Also, not totaly sure about win '00, but with XP you cant simply F-disk from a command prompt. You'll have to get a boot disk with it on there. A boot from a previous version of Windows will have what you need. Win 95b would be a good choice.

I could be wrong , but FDISK don't work with NTFS partitions .

If it's XP, as said , just load the disk and you will be given the chance to format the disk during the install .

Before you F-disk, be sure you have up to date drivers on floppy that will support your larger capacity hard drives and OS.

...Yes its an Win 2000 professional "Upgrade", and when I go to reformat it saves all the previous settings...which Im trying to clear, I still have all the original Win 98 OS disks...at least the win 98 gave me a clean re-install.
....There isnt anything on there that I really care about...all I use it for is internet surfing and non-internet games.

you can boot from a windows XP disk, and use the built in "partition" and "format" utility. Unless you're trying to conceal something on the hard drive in that case it has to be "scrubbed." But that is a whole other animal in itself. Don't mess with boot disks and FDisk ... its not for the begining or novice user. If you have to ask what it is, you're not ready to use it grasshoppa. Just use the Windows XP utility it's fairly easy to use. Good Luck

On Edit: I just noticed that you're trying to upgrade. Bad Idea never upgrade, especially going from something like Windows 98 to 2000. There are many changes that could be potential nightmares. Get a full version, and go from a clean install, never upgrade. Just my opinion from experience.

then what you would have to do is ... reinstall windows 98 fresh (while in the process "Fdisk" the drive) you would have to boot from the A: then use the Fdisk utility and follow this order:
delete logical drives
delete any extended partition
delete any primary partition
create a primary partition
create logical drive
escape Fdisk
reboot by pressing ctrl - alt - delete
let the machine reboot from the disk
then format C:\ (or whatever you assigned to the logical drive)
reboot again
run the windows 98 setup
configure windows 98
then once 98 up and running fresh and new
put in win2K cd and upgrade

elaborate yes
worth the time proly not

do yourself a favor, and download it from winMX, eMule, or get it from a friend.

my 2 pennies,

--Juan

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to do a clean install from an upgrade disk, as long as you have the disk for the version you are upgrading from. I haven't personally tried this with 2k, but every other upgrade gave you that option. If I am wrong, I'm sure someone will tell me.
