Steering Column Change

Help!! I was told that an easy switch for a 1952 ford Truck would be to get a column from a late 70's early 80s chevy van. It looks like it will be a great fit straight shaft and all, however can anyone tell me how to conect the "new shaft to the steering box. The length is perfect but does not allow room for connections etc. Help!! Thanks

My experience with these columns [3] has been that they are too long for my applications and I have cut the splines off the end to desired length. Borgenson has u-joints that are 3/4 " round, to be "pinned" to the column shaft. This has worked fine for me. You can then use DD shaft with another u-joint to connect to steering sector/rack. I do like the look and lack of ignition switch of these columns. Finding good ones has become almost impossible around here.

How short do you usually have to cut the "original" and then what do you do about the outside pipe that covers the shaft? I looked very long and hard to find this one so I know what you meen and would hate to mess it up. Do you have pictures?
Thanks

I have allways been able to cut the shaft short enough to suit my needs. I have never had to shorten the tube. It does usually protrude farther into the engine compartment than is ideal for my taste, but never enough to cause me to cut the tube. I will try some pictures of my F100 and my 46[ i'm new to digital photos]. Back in the late 70's or early 80's Street Rodder magazine had an article on shortening the tube on these columns, but I cannot locate my copy. I probably stuck it away for easy retrival. If I were contemplating such a modification, I believe I would sell the van column, and buy an aftermarket column.

Thanks for your help. I will attempt the modification without cutting the tube. I was just afraid of the additional couple inches of the joint. But will try it for the sake of $$$. I do not think I will have to go as far as the Tube. Your comments have been most helpful. Thanks.
