Hi All: Reassembling my 66 steering column, and have a question regarding the lower bearing#3517 and white plastic bearing sleeve#3518-A.
I am using the exploded view of the steering column available on the Fordification site for 65-72 F100/250 4x2.
I put the lower bearing into its housing at the bottom of column housing, oriented so that the chamfered side faces in towards the top of the housing. Then when I slide the steering shaft in from the bottom, how do I get the #3518-A bushing down to the bottom of the shaft to sit in the chamfered(rounded) part of the bearing housing and support/centre the shaft at the bottom(and keep it there), as shown in the exploded view diagram? Any help/suggestions very welcome. Thx. Jeff
Jeff, Ya can't do it that way, won't work as you have described.
The housing has two bearings, top and bottom and two bushings top and bottom. The top bearing chamfered side faces up and the bottom chamfered bearing faces DOWN. Plastic bushing at the bottom of the steering shaft goes UP into the bearing same way as the top one and is held in place by the steering shaft clamp.
If that is not too clear, then, imagine the top bearing/bushing and just flip it for the bottom. The wheel effectively holds the top plastic bushing in place by a spring and at the other end, the steering shaft clamp holds the bottom plastic bushing in place.
Thx Old Harley: I spent more time at the Fordification site and found some pictures in the steering column modification tech articles. It showed exactly what you describe. It also points out that the exploded view diagram is not correct. Have just come in from my shop where I did what you describe. It worked like a hot d***. My column is now totally refurbed. On to the next challenge. Thx again. Jeff
It also points out that the exploded view diagram is not correct.
Fordification is un-clear on the concept. The diagram (which I assume is from Section 35, page 8) pertains to 1965/72 F100/250 2WD's and 1967/72 F350's.
Some of these trucks do not all use the same parts. and how the parts are assembled may be different.
Exploded views in parts catalogs can be used as an assembly manual, but are not intended for that purpose. That's why a shop manual is necessary.
Parts Catalog exploded views are used to find the basic part numbers of parts.
Thx ND. Point well taken, in my inexperience I assumed the diagrams to be absolutely correct, and reassembled my column accordingly. Fortunately, my mechanical experience was good enough to see that the final assembly per the diagram was not right. Hence my earlier question, and the subsequent trolling of the Fordification site for photos, not diagrams.
Your advice is great, as was OldHarley's.
This is one of the benefits of this site, friendly Ford nuts with a willingness to provide advice, not criticism for mistakes made by amateur restorers.
Keep up the good work, ND, yours is incredibly valuable. Thx. Jeff
