ABS - working or not??

ABS - working or not??
I have a 2WD '00 Ranger 3.0 FFV with rear ABS. I have locked up the rear wheels while braking so I'm wondering if my ABS is working or not.
There have been couple of times when I have braked hard while moving fast (35 MPH+) and the hit a bump while braking and the ABS kicked in. I heard the system "clicking" and the vehicle stopped without locking up.
Any quick things a shadetree can check out? There is no CEL and I have scanned for codes.
