Prevention, as was posted earlier, bug zappers after the fact, and this is the reason why I try and protect bats. I have lived in places that had a lot of bats near, and they DEFINITELY like mosquitos on the menu. They eat millions every night.
1. Remove standing water, where possible
2. Build some bat houses
3. Maintain lawn as bushes
4. Minimize outdoor lights
5. The citronella candles and torches work alright for small areas
6. the ZAPPER, of course these also draw more bugs into your area, which may reroute towards you. They're drawn towards the carbon dioxide people emit.
Yep, bro-in-law has an old attic fan that he build a box around... hid it on one end of this fabulous deck he has and it turns SO slow you hardly hear it, but MAN - it puts out some wind !
Around here we call those Bubba fans I have one that turns a mite faster that I use to blow the skeeters away when I am working outside on the vehicles.
Bro-in-law is the proverbial pack rat !!! Has a nice little 10-20 acres that he has two barns at the back that he stores EVERYTHING in and resuses it !
In fact, he used the used materials to build the two garages he keeps is TWO motorhomes in !
Here in south Louisiana [where mosquitos have been known to almost smother cattle, no kidding!] all you can do is repel them with skin so soft or some deet product.Just try to keep breeding areas down.Zappers just attract them to your area.If your patio has bushes around it, this is a known hiding place. If you have a pond, introduce minnows that will eat any larvae.
Down here mosquitos are a fact of life all year round. We can have 4 days of freezing weather [rare] and as soon as it warms a little, here they come! It's like where do they hide?Fans work well to keep them from landing on you.Not only do they bite, but we have west nile virus to worry about, which we have personally lost a couple of horses to.The only good way to kill them is to swat them when they land on you.We have mosquito trucks spraying on our property and it does not seem to help, but it probaly does.We have bats, mosquito hawks, purple martins etc and we are still overwhelmed.Heartworm medication for dogs is manditory because it is only a matter of time before heartworm larvae is transported to your dogs.We have more than one type also.Tigerstripe mosquitos are vicious.Oh did i mention the gnats too?And fire ants have taken over, but there is no good way to eradicate mosquitos, at least down here.
Down in the south mosquitoes are a way of life. If you have ever been hunting in the marsh when it is warm outside, you know millions and millions of mosquitoes sound like. Then when you uses the q-beam, there are literly mosquitoes everywhere. Solid walls of mosquitoes are normal. My best advice is to use Off Deep Woods if no fan is avable. In the marsh the worst days are when it is warm and no wind. Those are the days you will walk out of the marsh with over 30 bites on your hands. Also keep covered. Long sleve shirts and pants/jeans will help alot.
When it comes to mosquitoes, there is no one thing that will save you from them, it is usually a combination of different things.
I do my part to keep the repellant manufacturers in business.
I've heard mixed reviews on the propane traps. Some claim they work great and others say they're crap. From what I've gathered the Mosquito Magnet brand is the best choice. I'll probably buy one and if it doesn't work to my satisfaction, I'll return it for a refund.
