abs light & gear shift
I don't know the specific name of the sensor, but I do know there is a sensor on the brake pedal or arm that tells the gear shift to release. I imagine that sensor is what is giving you the problems. I will call a friend at Ford tomorrow and get the specifics and post, unless someone knows and posts first...

Might be a problemn with the shift interlock? That's what locks the gearshift until you press down on the brake. I know some are adjustable, but I've never had this problem on a Ford. Might check a Chilton's manual since they seem to cover more problems than a Haynes manual...

abs light & gear shift
I know on new crown vics that the release is simply connected with the brake light being activated. I drive police car crown vics. When we flip a switch that deactivates the brake light (for sneaking around in the dark) we cant get the car out of park, because the brakelight isnt on. Maybe this will help somehow.

To Cobra XP,
Just before I took the Explorer to the shop, I decided to poke around the brake arm. Something was loose. Snugged it back up and everything is working great. Don't know about the ABS light. Have just driven a short distance. Thanks for the help and saving moolah !!
