Keyless remote add on?
You seem to be a man in the know.
I just bought a 2002 Explorer XLT.
This is my 3rd X, but the 1st one I have
bought used. The dealer was NOT a Ford dealer
and had just one fob. I need to have 2 fobs and
have considered buying from eBay rather than from Ford.
A coworker happened to have a left over fob from an older
X that he had sold and he said "Here, you can have this
one, give it a try...you can read how to program it in your
owners manual". I figured I would give it a shot (FREE IS GOOD)...
However, when I followed the simple instructions (turn ignition 8x between position 2 and 3 within 10 seconds than push any button on remote) nothing happened...The free remote did not work...No big deal, it probably was not the right model fob,...MY BIG PROBLEM IS: NOW MY ORIGINAL REMOTE IS NOT WORKING...Any thoughts?
I appreciate any advice you might have.
VTY,
Steve
The reason the additional remote doesn't work is likely because it is a slightly different model. I know the 2002 X's have a release for the rear glass on the remote. The older models do not. It is very likely that the new remote therefore uses a different set of codes than the previous ones do. I'm really not sure but this is my educated guess.
Another thought would be, assuming you did have both remotes, that the you turned the key to the wrong positions. You can be sure you did it correctly if the doors lock and then unlock themselves after turing the key the 8 times.
I have a 98 but I assume that the key positions are the same on your's as they have been for awhile now. You mentioned position 2 and 3. Unless you're counting the Lock position as 1, then this could be your problem. Position 1 is actually the Accessory position, below Lock which is 2. Off is 3 and On is 4. Start is 5. To program the remotes, you need to switch the key from Off to On which is actually positions 3 and 4.
I believe if you attempt to reprogram the original by itself, it should work. I hope this helps. And thanks for the compliment. I'm not an expert but an informed and always learning Ford enthusiast.

Good Luck
I certainly appreciate your feedback. I had not considered that the programming would potentially disable my original remote while (although it did not work) enabling the "gift" remote...That is, I viewed the process as adding a remote rather than replacing a remote. I did have the original remote present, but I did not simultaneously press any buttons on it. The new owners manual considers LOCK as position 1, ACC as 2, ON as 3, and START as 4...The instructions begin by stating that you must have ALL remotes present to perform programming...Maybe this is my problem as I only have one (I suppose the original owner may have the other(s))...
Perhaps the system was looking for 2, 3 or 4 remotes and only "saw" one, this may have caused it to abort...I guess that the "gift" remote was part of the problem too, since it is only a 3 button remote...(I figured if it worked I would just not have the tailgate open feature)...
After realizing that my original remote was "dead", I did attempt to reprogram the original remote but it did not take...I did get the indication that I was indeed in program mode signified by the locking and unlocking of the doors...
I hate to be at the mercy of a dealer for something that I should be able to do myself, but maybe I'll have to go to my local Ford dealer to buy a remote and have them program it and my original..

Have you any reccommendations for resources on the web (i.e., Ford sponsored knowledge base or something) that offer more info than a user manual? I am hoping to find a way to modify or reset the parameters of the programming to tell the system that there is only one original remote (actually now there are none that work)...If I can find that kind of info, I think I should be back in business.
I look forward to your reply.
AYS, Steve
To program the transmitters yourself:
1.Insert a key in the ignition and turn from 3(Off) to 4(On) eight times in rapid succession (within 10 seconds) with the eighth turn ending in the 4(On) position.
2.The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that programming mode has been entered.
3.Within 20 seconds, program a remote transmitter by pressing any button on a transmitter. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that the remote transmitter has been programmed. (If more than 20 seconds pass before pressing a remote transmitter button, the programming mode will exit and the procedure will have to be repeated.)
4.Repeat the previous step to program additional remote transmitters. The doors will lock/unlock to confirm that each remote transmitter has been programmed.
5.When you have completed programming the remote transmitters, turn the ignition to 3(Off) or wait 20 seconds. Again the doors will lock/unlock to confirm programming has been completed.
I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere that you need atleast two remote to program. It is interesting on this site above that it mentioned that each time you press a button on a remote to program it, the doors will again lock and unlock for confirmation. Did this happen with you? I would try programming the remote once more. If it still doesn't work, try checking the battery to see if it's dead or is loose. Simple things but it is good to rule them out.
I don't know of any good places to get a remote beside the dealer or ebay.
I wish I could help more... Good luck

Thanks again...
Yeah, I did get the locking and unlocking of the doors (indicating that I was in programming mode)...
btw, the link that you pasted concerning the Ford Programming instructions did have the following blurb (highlighted in a grey box above the 1st instruction)
"It is necessary to have ALL (maximum of four-original and/or new) of your remote transmitters available prior to beginning this procedure"
They kinda slipped it in there at the top..
Anyway, since your last message...I turned the internet upside-down looking for a work-around...I accepted the fact that I would have to buy a remote and program it through a local Ford dealer...
I called several (I happen to have about 8 dealers in a 15 mile radius) dealers and got mixed information:
1 dealer wanted $55 dollars per remote and $85 dollars to program (as many as I want)
another dealer wanted $58 dollars for the remote and would program it for free...So I went there...Well I bought the remote and the service guy tried to do the same thing I did over the weekend..Guess what??!?! he could not program the new remote or my existing remote...He said that I would have to make an appointment and come back to have it done..He did say though that it was a warranty item and that there would be no charge!!! I was suprised to hear that...I will let you know what happens and give you the explaination they give me...
One of the dealers I called with said that there is no way that I could program my remotes on my own..they said that they frequently have this problem when customers buy used vehicles and don't get all of the remotes...I would have to go there and they would have to hook my X up to their computer to reprogram all remotes (not restore)Apparently, when a customer attempts to program a remote that they purchase, the system "knows" that all original remotes are not present and disables everything...I further assume that the reasoning behind this is that only an owner would have all original remotes, thus preventing me from programming a remote to work with your truck (partly good thinking, but sadly Ford did not design the system to accomodate people who buy used vehicles and are missing 1 or more original remotes)
Keep on Truckin'
Steve
