Would like some imput to diagnose a sloppy drive train. Not quite a clunk , but too much movement. It's a 4x4 five speed 5.0 '89 f-150 . Does'nt have the movement when I change gears during very cold weather, in four wheel drive ,or when shifting on a steep incline. U-joints are ok, seems like the diff has a lot of lash, would that fit or explain the above conditions? any other posibilities?
There should not be much backlash in the rear end. If you take the driveshaft off, and are able to turn the flange in the front of the axle more than just a tiny bit, chances are your spyder gears/side gears are worn and are sloppy. At 100k miles, mine were so sloppy that they started to clunk when I let up on the clutch and they had enough slack to slam eachother. I put a new differential in and the drivetrain was a lot smoother. It doesn't buck like it used to in traffic while driving along in 1st gear (on and off throttle).
Mustang, did you do a rebuild or switch to a used diff, what do you think is the best way to go, my '89 has over 200,000 miles ( almost carefree!) Also please give a rough idea of costs. Thanks
