My 04' 350XLT Sport 6.0L was origionally equipped with the smaller style non-tow mirrors, they however were electric. I want to upgrade to the heated tow mirors. My dealer says it cant be done because the wireing does not exist for the heat feature. I find hard to believe that somewhere in the wire harness even if deep within the dash there is some type of plug for it. He is saying that Ford installs different harnesses for different trucks. I find this hard to believe. If anybody can help please let me know!
Just to give you a small example, the 04 Ford Expedition has 24 different wiring harnesses thru the model production year just for the headliner wiring loom. Yes, different models have different looms depending mainly on the various trim levels.
Thanks for the help. After talking mith my dealer extensively he indicated as you suggested that there are mltiple looms but the correct wires may be in place for the heat, but indicated that there is no way to know without ripping everything apart. Is there any way to find out the wire configuration without tearing the entire truck apart?
Taking a mirror off is usually not that hard. Pull one off, and look at the harness plug that connects the mirror to the door wiring. There should be 4 small wires. If the wiring for heated mirrors is also present, there will be two additional larger caliber wires (one for ground, one for +12 v).
Muth company offers factory replacement or add on heated mirrors. Look to their site to see what is involved in adding heated mirrors to a non-heated harness system. You can do a similar add-on wiring install to activate added on factory heated mirrors. But you do have to take the door panels off, tap into the fuse box, etc.
