Lately, I've noticed a hesitation or skipping on moderate to heavy acceleration. Will an engine problem trip the idiot light, or will it just store a code? I would have thought that there were particular tolerances the engine would perform under (coil pack, fuel filter, etc) and when it falls outside of those parameters, something would trip a warning (?). I'm going to bring it to my mechanic and see if it kicks any codes, but wanted to be an informed consumer beforehand.
The system is always scanning for problems. It is my understanding that in order for the light to illuminate, the problem must be detected through several scan cycles. If you're light is not on, there shouldn't be any codes.
My 99 has hesitation AND the check Engine light came on......im thinking it's the timeing. Will have a mechanic check it out this week.
Hesitation could be caused by.......water (condensation) in the fuel line or filter....ADD some HEET and it should take care of it....or of course timeing, or related item. take care
Boracay...Your timing is not the problem as it is not adjustable.
Hesitation is usually caused by misfires...which can, and under severe circumstances, WILL set the MIL. Under the most severe misfire (Type A), the MIL is an immediate flashing indicator.
Itis absolutely pointless to try to guess why a MIL is on. Go get the codes read and be SURE why it's on.
Auto parts stores offer free scanning. Go there, have it scanned, WRITE DOWN THE EXACT CODES (not the descriptions), then come back here for assistance (unless you want to just let the mechanic do it. Be advised that if your vehicle is a 2004 or newer, the scan tool must be a new style called a CAN-protocol. Most autoparts stores have not yet upgraded their scan tools.
