If you don't mind my asking, how much did that run? I'm lucky enough to be getting a company car soon, but I'm looking into keeping the beast. She's got a newer mill under the hood, but I'm gonna need a new tranny. I'm debating whether to keep her, and put time and money into her when it comes, or take the money and run. That's why I ask, honestly hoping that a tranny rebuild and the labor involved won't be TOO unreasonable ($$$$).
It cost $1,200 at a mom and pop shop and AAMCO quoted me $1,700 but in the end I had to fork over the $500 to AAMCO anyhow a year later to get a re-seal job. The warranty was only good for 90 days at the mom and pop shop. Sometimes you get what you pay for... but If I had to do it all over again I would look into just getting a new one instead... there were major problems with the E4OD when they first came out... part of the overhaul was to update some weak and poorly designed parts with heavy duty parts... the tranny shop had to order these parts from New Jersey... I think.. My memory fails me even at my young age.... The new E4OD's are defect free for the most part but I am not sure I would replace it with an E4OD... I would do some research first to see what options are best for you as you will end up spending some serious loot!
mine's a C6 and the NJ guy I know will never EVER see any of my vehicles again. Good luck with the tranny.
Question, and it's an odd one, so I figured I'd just ask you in here:
Remember in tv shows and cartoons when they show a plane or helicopter crashing? You know how the old time sound effect they do for it is just taking the sound and chopping it up, so it sounds like the engine is just off, for a hair of a second? My bronco is doing that now. Is this an injector thing? It only does it under hard acceleration, as thats the only type it sees now to make it move at all. Sorry about the goofy analogy, but it's the first thing that came to my mind when I heard it.
JD, your tranny is the cheapest and most stout available. you can get a sweet built one for around $1000 or less. check out ARTcar, and some of the other specialty tranny shops. are you sure its a c-6, i have an 88 also that had a 302 and my tranny was AOD. you might double check that because im not sure they put that tranny behind 302's in those years.
now for the mis you feel, could be a clogged fuel filter, timing might be off (10*btdc) . i would check those things.
late
JD, I am trying to imagine that sound but what comes to mind is when they show a plane running out of fuel and it starts to sputter.... is this correct? As far as my repair goes I am in the process of that as I was too busy over the weekend insulating the front half floor of the rig. I just need to find a sparkplug boot replacement, right now it is only temporarily fixed (electrical tape and silicone grease) and boy does it run good!
Thank you kemicalburns. I'm glad you got the analogy, I wasn't sure I'd be making my point, sometimes thats the best way.
And yes, red, you got the idea!!
I'm 99% sure that it's a C6. I do not have OD, do not have the white circle w/ D in it on my gear selector in the dash, and have a square pan that is 2 levels (gets deeper at one point) and has a small notch squared out in one corner. I say 99% because I've read that they didn't back '88 302s with the C6 also. I'm no trans. mechanic by any means, but I'm almost certain its a C6. There's also a "63" cast on the bottom of the case I noticed when I was on my creeper cursing at it, not sure if that means anything. Now with a new motor (less than 50,000 miles), a bum tranny, and some tuning issues with a very clean, very stock truck, how much would you call a good price for selling this (just out of curiosity, may have to soon).
post some pics, then i could give you a good estimate. i picked up my bronco 2yrs ago for 3k. it had 160k body and interior were 98% the motor was on its way out but ok and i had the AOD tranny. also came with 2 sets of tires. bfg alt for summer and some studded tires for winter both on there own set of rims. so if that gives you an idea i would say 2k-3k depending on body, interior and such.
