Painting Engine

I am building an engine soon and would like to paint my block red, oil pan black, keep the heads their aluminum color, and put on some chrome valve covers.

What kind of primer/paint should I use on the pan and the block? How many coats of each? Should I also use some clear coat?

Any tips for painting this, I assume you'd just mask off the areas on the block where you don't want paint and seems pretty simple. Thanks.

I've used acrylic enamel and some of the modern base/clear systems on engines with zero problems. The only places it discolored or burned was right around the exhaust ports on the heads, and with your aluminum ones that wouldn't be a problem. I just paint with normal primer/surfacer first. Treat it just like the body of the car. Make sure no oil or grease is on it to mess up the paint. I've also used clearcoat on aluminum intakes to keep them from oxidizing.

What about the heat, should I use a hi-temp paint?

Not unless you're using rattle cans. My brother always used acrylic enamel on his and painted them body color, and I picked up the habit too. As I said before the only place it ever burned was right around the exhaust ports, and not real bad there either.

Thumbs up

shoot the block with degreaser , then spray with brake clean the non chlorinated stuff then paint with duplicolor high heat paint .primer is not recommended on a block because the thicker the paint the more it insulates .u want heat transfer to help cool the engine, the thicker the paint the worse it is. it is like puttin a real heavy quilt on when its hot ur gunna burn up, the high temp stuff is like 4 bucks a can and it is an enamel.also if have any paint to remove just get urself some carb and choke cleaner the paint will fall right off.just did mine that way after 3 weeks of research on paintin blocks and talkin to many hot rodders.also steer clear of the clear on polished aluminum unless u wont be keepin the ride very long it doesnt last maybe 2 years or so. polished aluminum is very slick the opposite of what u want for paint to stick.

Yea aluminum is difficult to paint, but I'm not going to be painting the aluminum heads so its ok. I figured that some good spray paint would work well, it's not a show truck but I'd like a nice custom touch to it. Thanks for the help, now I just need my block! lol
