I just finished removing old paint, degreasing and cleaning, and am ready for paint I believe. Is there anything I should use prior to applying the primer to the block. I used some ospho which stated to paint it on the block, then let is sit for 24 hours, and paint over it. anyone have any experience with this?
All I've ever done is clean the block, use some Acrysol or any other kind of solvent to take off the cleaning residue, let it dry and prime and paint it.
If you have made it to this point, you should be ready for primer. Just don't over do it. Too much primer will crack and peel under the heat. Make sure that you get all of the cleaning solvents off. One way is to pressure wash with alcohol. Just be careful. Any solvent is much more explosive and dangerous (inhalation) under pressure, especially the vapors. You can also pressure wash with just TSP and water after sealing off the intake and any other openings.
Also, when you prime and paint, keep the coating off any sealing areas, like the carb to intake, headers to heads, distributor to intake. Another idea is to find an old set of plugs, break off the porcelan and install loosely. This will let you paint into the plug recesses a lot easier.
Take you time on the finish coat. Four light aplications will look a lot better and two heavy ones. Use a mist coat, also called a tack coat first. Let it set until you cannot leave a pingerprint on you masking, then apply three more light coats. The last coat should give your complete coverage.
