Leafblower supercharger

Ok, i just thought of this looking through a tool magazine. saw a leafblower, and as always was thinking about my truck... so the 2 got combined.

WOuld a leaf blower work as a SC. And since i know there has to be some problems, why wont it?

The only thing i can think of is the boost. A leaf blower puts out more volume than pressure.

Just shoot me now.

I'm unsure of the volume in CFM that a leafblower produces but consider this: push the output nozzle against a flat surface. You'll hear the engine speed increase as the impeller cavitates; in other words it can't produce enough pressure, its notmoveing enoug air. I don't know the exact figure, but I think my SC requires about 25hp. Even if you had a 25hp leaf blower with an impeller that did not cavitate, you would have problems matching blower speed to engine need.

F100, could you post that link, i couldnt find it in my search.

hkiefus, if you removed the Leafblower motor, and attached a pulley, you could just run it off your belt.

Im not gonna try it, but i think it would be interesting.

But that doesn't overcome the impeller cavitation. I'm not sure how they get around this on the centrifugal superchargers.

Stong internal transmissions and billet impellers.... Keep this in mind, that plastic leaf blower impeller is made to handle the rpms of that electric motor...~3000 - 5000 rpms. The impeller on a supercharger is designed to handle 50,000 - 75,000 rpms on most street units (takes care of the cavitation part). Even before centrifugal force shatters the leaf blower impeller, heat is going to warp and melt it. There is a company that makes electric "superchargers" but they are using very powerful motors and at the most they are making 1 psi of boost.

But even a little more air in the engine would be worth it. I mean people spend $300+ to eliminate the restriction in their intakes.

And there are gas leaf blowers. Those little 2 cycle engines turn pretty fast and get pretty hot. And you could play around with the size of the pulley to get it spinning where you want it.

here is that old link and if you scroll down some somebody has another link showing a toro leafblower under the hood. it might work just a little but if you block the air outlet of the blower, the air will push itself out of the inlet of the blower like said here and in the link.

I was looking into this awile back there could be minimal power gains for short burst. I found a company it Ca. (I think) they make a 1000cfm Ducted Fan like device called a e-ram
www.electricsupercharger.com
It looks like it could work, if there numbers are for real, and any Engines over 5.0 would need a double setup
there theory seem to be it line, and there Q and A countered all my concerns.

I wonder if it would improve any other bolt on Gains like cold air intakes, TB spacers, oversised TB, That tornado thing, mass air sensor, chip .........................?

On a 300 1 PSI boost is good for about 10 ft-lbs of torque and 7-8 HP. I can think of better uses for my money.
