I stumbled into a blower from a Detroit 4-53 that I don't have a use for. Rather than carting it off to fleabay, I thought - would this go on a 7.3??
I can get an extra manifold from a salvage yard. I would have to make a plate matching the round hole manifold to the rectangular blower bottom. I would think 2" thick aluminum should offer enough strength. The longest front shaft is 6.7" long. This might be too short and I would have to make a longer one and have it balanced. Diving it is where I am stumped. I would like to run a toothed 2" belt, but don't know how to set up the crank pulley with all the other pulleys (A/C, alt, water pump...)?
This has to have been done or at least thought out before. I would run the blower in addition to the turbo. My turbo generates about 9psi, with the blower I might see 15psi. I don't need to win a HP race, just like a truck that is different and that performs better than the average truck.
It seems like a better idea to sell the blower and put the money into a halfway decent turbo. I mean, even a wastegated Banks turbo kit can deliver 18PSI(if you wire the wastegate shut and have the fuel for it), and you had better have headstuds if you intend to be running more PSI.
Also, I'd expect the blower to cost some extra fuel; a turbo is /much/ more efficient at converting fuel energy into boost pressure than a blower which has to be driven from a belt and all the losses incurred.
You might also look at adding an intercooler; reducing the air temps = more oxygen per PSI in.
I have seen guys supercharge diesels. Look up Crazy Carl's Turbos. He has some pretty cool supercharged Cummins setups. There are also a few Procharged Duramax and Powerstrokes around too. Look that up as well. I plan on blowing an Hx50 into an Eaton M112 if I ever get the chance to finish it. It should be pretty cool when its done. Your setup could work but I would bypass the blower after boost starts to come on. Additionally, I would add a bigger turbo to take complete advantage of the setup. Do some research and if you have any questions feel free to ask me. I have done a lot of research on these setups on diesels...
