I posted a message about this when i first got to these forums a while back but never really got an answer. My shift **** is upside down, it looks like the previous owner twisted it around. I can tell where the bottom of the **** isnt lined up with the stick. How do i turn this thing around?!
Thanks,
Phil
My shift **** turns in my ranger too. I'm assuming from my hard shifts. One time it even poped off and I almost hit myself. I put super glue on it but it still spins but won't come off. Takes a little force but should be able to turn it.
What year trucks do you guys have? The one in my 2000 was molded right onto the end of the shaft. I had to cut it off with a hacksaw to put an aftermarket one on.
I have a 99. One hot August day it came off on an easy shift in a parking lot. The glue (or maybe just the botttom plastic) had melted. I ended up having to glue it back on. Like MyRanger4Ever mine still spins with force but does not come off.
In my '98 it turns with force also. I first noticed it when shifting hard. Mine has popped off as well, quite a surprise. Should be able to just turn it back.
Heat denatures the epoxy that holds the **** on. RTV silicone works great to put it back on. I cut my hand when the shift **** actually broke into a couple of shards in mid shift. I took a chunk of Walnut and turned a new **** then RTV'd it back on.
Well i was sitting in my truck today and tried turning it again. And for some reason it turned so easy. So now it's finally facing the right way. It's weird though because before, i had a couple people try to turn it, with no luck. So i'm happy now :-)
the **** on my '88 came off one summer when it was hot and i got a wood ball from jo-anns ( a craft&fabric store the wife frequents) about 3" in diameter, drilled a hole in it just smaller than the spline on the gear shift lever, and tapped it on with a plastic shot-hammer. wish these trans used a threaded shaft insted of splines, ive got a cool cast alumminum b&m t-handle i would like to try out. maybe the replacement hurst shifter from jegs is threaded at the **** end. anyone know?
what would be the best way to intentionally remove the ****? I'm thinking a heat gun might work. I tried twisting mine, but was afraid of bending/breaking something.
ive heard using heat gun would work, or if you are going to replace it anyhow, maybe use a dremel with a cut-off wheel and cut into the **** along 2 opposing sides of the ****, use a heat gun or hair dryer on high, dont forget your leather gloves, twist and pull, and that should remove it.
Just twist and pull on it real hard. If it's like mine then I don't think you will break anything. (But do be mad at me if you do. )
Then you can put whatever you want on there.
The shift **** itself on my B3000 doesn't turn, but the button insert that shows the shift pattern can turn (I even pried it out once). I know that it's always at some funky angle from shifting. I just use my palm to press on the insert and easily twist it back in place. It has never popped out on me. There was no glue under the insert; it's just a press fit in the ****.
Years ago I replaced the shift **** on my '68 Jeep Wagoneer with an 8 ball I had drilled and tapped for me (I was in high school and didn't have any real tools yet). Seems to me it would be fairly simple to cut threads on a splined shifter using a thread die. Even if the threads didn't cut to the base of the splines, they should work fine. A few drops of loctite and voila!
