I was backing my van out of the garage and it felt like a brake was grabbing. In drive the van worked fine. I jacked the back end up and took the wheels off only to find there was no problem with the rear brakes. Everything from front to back rotated fine without the engine running in all gears. Put the tires back on and back out of the garage...same problem...worse... I had to rev the engine quite high to get the van out of the garage...and when I let off of the gas the vehicle stopped and rocked like I slammed on the brakes. Put it in drive and it rolled forward nicely. Then I tried D,2, and 1...as I went down in gears the problem got progressively worse resembling the reverse gear. I checked the tranny oil level and it is fine...even a bit high...a very light pink almost clear brown colour and smells like oil, (not burned).
I had the tranny replaced with a rebuilt 18 months ago for 1800.00 CDN.
bands do not tighten up on their own. they get loose in time. sound like you could have a valve body problem. if your lucky it could be a stuck valve. this could be fixed without pulling tranny. its trying to drive forward and backwards at the same time. i would not drive it like this. you will damage the tranny.
My 5 speed did this once.. I foudn it was a parking brake starting to seize... it was as simple as replacing the line. For about a week it had felt in the lower gears and reverse like I was driving with the main brakes applied a little but it would die out with speed. Check on your parking brake... does is feel sticky when it releases? or suddenly get very loose on the release throw? if so check your Emerg brake line. may be something that simple Hope that helps.
Is the valve body hard to fix or access? Can I unstick a valve or is there a way to determine by diagram somewhere what the valves do and how to access them? I fix aircraft if I have the info I think I can do it time permitting.
I double checked the brakes and its not them. I also did a belt adjust because it was simple but no joy.
Thanks again and more info from anyone would be great.
