I have a 2000 Excursion V10 and at startup engine goes to 1800 rpm and idles between 800-1400 rpms in gear is usually around 1200. kinda hard to hold still with brakes at 1200. two nights ago idle went to 2000 and stayed tapped the gas and went to 3000 and stayed shut engine off, started up resumed 3000. shut off let sit an hour was back at 900. i cleaned inside throttle body and problems still resumed. also noticing big idle differeces when changing heat controls form vent to defrost but with controls off problem still occurs any help or ideals thanks <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig -->
Are there any fault codes available to help diagnose the problem? If you have not checked, you probably should. My best guess is either a problem with the Idle Air Control valve or a vacuum leak. The symptoms you describe lead me to think it might be a vacuum leak.
can u get these fault codes even if theirr is no check engine light on, i noticed if i turn the vents on with the heater control idles down fine in gear and in park as soon as i turn control **** to deprost immediatly goes up to about 1500 and stays around 1100 turn back to vent tap the gas and comes back down to about 800
Sounds like vacuum leak to me too. I found my leak by spraying WD40 around my vacuum lines till I heard the engine rev. Might work for you, might not. Good luck,
My 2000 v-10 had idle issues also, would idle all over the place. I took off the idle control valve aka idle control motor cleaned out the carbon with choke cleaner and toothbrush . Got lucky fixed my problem or you can find them on internet for around $60, damn those 5/16 little bolts. Hope that helps
I had the same problem. When my AC turned on or cycled, the rpms would kick up and create a power surge. hard to keep the EX still at a light. I replaced my IAC valve. Its located behind your throttle body, DIRECTLY behind it. If you are on the passenger side of your EX, Look behind where your air intake is, between that and the firewall. you will find a small wire harness plugged into it and a rather large rubber hose maybe a 1 inch hose going to the back of your body there. There are 2 small bolts that hold it on, One at the top and one at the bottom I think they were 8mm. You need an 8mm Deep socket to pull them out. IAC valve at the dealer 132. Iac valve from parts store 65.00 wholesale cost. Cured my problem.

If you take the old one off you can probably just clean all that carbon build-up off and reuse it. Worked on my Durango and my Excursion died a couple of time and I was going to clean it out also but it hasn't acted up again.
thanks for all the great ideals weekends finally here so i can try these bananarama your problem sounds exactly like mine this week the more i listened to it its definately when the ac kicks on these x's definately dont like to stay still with all the power thanks again everybody. Byron
Just becareful to NOT BUGGER up the IAC valve Gasket. Also, I noticed with the new IAC valve I get Much better gas milage. Up 2 miles to the gallon average. Also, it takes off like a bat out of...a cave. Oh, and before you attempt this, take a page out of my book! Buy one of them magnet sticks that extend. If you drop a bolt its going under the intake manifold and you will need it. I installed the newone by using just a wee thin coat of gasket sealant, just to keep the gasket in place on the IAC valve. Then I sorta threaded the bolts through the gasket cuz trying to get those buggers in while holding it in place was enuff to turn your ears red. Dont over tighten either.
