Thanks to those who responded to my question about improving the ride on my 99 Explorer. I had the Monroe REFLEX shocks installed on Monday and the difference for me was NIGHT and DAY! The ride is better. The handling is better. My Explorer is much more of a pleasure to drive. The best 300 bones I ever spent. I would recommend them to anyone. The only thing is, now I have to get new tires as they complain more during cornering.
awright!!!!!now look into those yokohama avid s/t's ive been hyping....just got back from a 3400 mile road trip on them...all kinds of posts on he subject...
What is the expected life of the shocks? I looked at the description on the website and was impressed with the design but didn't see any mention of lifespan.
i tried to figure that out too before i took the plunge, and really couldnt get a technically satisfying answer..the shop i went to to install them warranties parts/labor for a minimum of 12 mos or 12k miles, but thats not answering the question either, the sspension research i did on my own led me to believe 2 things, 1-the stuff you bounce them over affects them to the point where no manufacturer is going to predict how long they should last, because no one can define " normal" use, and 2- the reflexes are built technically better than the oe shocks your expo came with...therefore, i believe i should get at least as many miles on these new ones as i got on the old ones before i got sensitive in the *** if you know what i mean...so i guess maybe 40-45k miles, PROVIDED you're not doing serious off roading, just maybe some gravel roads. i stay on the pavement except the last 1 mi to my house which is gravel and a little bumpy, but i'm happy as a clam with these shocks..
On the overwhelming advice of several threads on this board, I opted to replace my whipped OEM shocks with Monroe Reflex. Overall, I like the ride. I had quite a bit of diagonal rocking and some side to side rolling on the OEM shocks. They of course didn't dampen out the oscillations very well. The new Monroes got rid of all that diagonal and side to side rocking, and now the truck only bounces once, even over huge dips.
The one complaint I have is that I now have some front to back rocking on the freeway that I didn't have before. It is sometimes quite annoying. I suspect that the problem has to do with wheel base. My '95 Explorer is the 2 door 4WD Expedition model with the optional 16 inch wheels. My guess is that Monroe did all their testing with the 4 door model which has a longer wheel base. Freeway expansion joints just set my shorter wheel base Explorer to rocking, and I probably nevr noticed it with the OEM shocks because they were so much softer.
So, if you have the 4 door Explorer, these would probably be great shocks for you. If you have a 2 door, there might be something better on the market.
