'98 Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L Auto I have an idiot light which comes on and isn't refered to in the owner's manual. I have the optional instrument panel w/tachometer, on the right side just left of the voltmeter there is a symbol of a gas pump with three drops next to it. As I mentioned, I haven't found this in any publication, I assume it's fuel related. Does anyone have an idea of what it means?
May or may not be related, I've been having a problem with the spark plug for cylinder #4 fouling about every 5000 miles.
I don't think it has to do with fuel level. The fuel gauge works fine, when the fuel level does get low, the check gauge light comes on, not the odd light I mentioned.
This odd light is yellow which I assume means an advisory and not an indication of an immediate problem. Interestingly, this light fades in and out, and is usually on for just a few seconds (15 or 20 at the most). Also, I can only recall seeing it when the weather is warm.
Just a shot in the dark - but do the Rangers and the F350 diesels share a instrument panel? If so - it could be the water in fuel light - and maybe yours is coming on from a wiring short or something!
I can't believe this happened to someone else! Welcome to the club! lol
I have the same truck ( 98 4x4 4.0L XLT ) and on one hot day, I saw that light fade on and off for a few minutes, with the fuel and water drops... I took it to the dealership (Stopped doing it by then) and they had NO idea. My best guess is that it shares the instrument panel with the Ranger's from other countries, where diesel engines are available. But I have NO idea why or how the light come on. Interesting though, isnt it ...
Don't worry about it though, I've only seen it twice in two years, means nothing as far is a can tell...
Thanks Allanlepage and 98xlt4x4,
Well I'm glad I'm not hallucinating and that someone else has seen this thing. You're probably right about it being diesel related and I'm also guessing it's an export feature. But I have been having problems with the engine running a little rough and being hestitant during acceleration (I don't want to say bogging, it's not that bad) and hoped that an understanding this light would shed some light on what's going on.
Thanks zman764 and thecannibal,
Some other folks have suggested plug wires, I thought my mechanic replaced those but I'm going to change them again since I'm not sure he did. My mechanic did check my compression and valve guides and said they were good so I really hope I don't have a deeper engine problem.
I also have a 98 4x4 and I've never seen it light up, but I always though it was a low fuel light, as opposed to the "Check Gage" (not gauge) light. To tell you the truth, I've never taken the gas below 3 gallons. My "Check Gage" light comes on with 5 gallons left!
I swear my wife's Explorers in the 90's had this light as the low fuel light. I just figured the Ranger never had the sensor - just shared the same gauge cluster.
