Hi . I'm a first time user and ready to pull hair! I have a 1992 ,2.3l, 2-wheel drive ranger. The battery light came on. We replaced a fuse( under the hood) put in a new battery and an altinator. When the rpms are up to shift the gauge maxs out on 18 and the charge light comes on. It does this in every gear. When shifted into 5th gear gauge is normal till you hit 60 mph. I have had the altinator tested it's working like it's suppose to. I really like my little ranger.
Welcome to FTE!
Use a multimeter ($20 if you have to buy one) to test the voltage at the battery. With the engine off, it should be 12v. With the engine running at idle, it should be 14.3v. Keep the meter on & rev up the engine to see if in fact it is charging to 18v. The guage in the dash isn't 100% reliable.

Diodes are one-way electrical "valves". They let current flow one direction, but not the other. Alternators put out alternating current,(AC), and the diodes convert that to direct current(DC) by blocking flow in one direction. This is a VERY basic explanation.
