'99 5.4 pings

I have a '99 F-150 with a 5.4. I noticed it started to ping at around 70k miles. It started as just a little and slowly became worse. I changed the plugs, cleaned the injectors, cleaned the throttle body and butterfly, cleaned and checked the egr valve all at 97k miles. The plugs looked perfect. Nice clean burn. WOW! What a difference it made. Two tanks of gas later (about two weeks) it runs just like before. It idles good and runs smooth, just pings alot. I even tried gas from a different vendor...still pings. Any ideas?

Clean the MAF sensor? If not, try that. But make sure to unplug the negative battery lead first.

I looked at the MAF sensor...seemed pretty clean...in fact all the intake seemed exceptionally clean until it got to the butterfly. I thought about cleaning it, but I wasn't sure I could clean it without tearing it up. How does one clean it anyway? Spray it with throttle body cleaner?

Take a look at this link. Even though it's for the 3.0, the procedure is the same. Just the MAF and it's install is different.
