Wink 4R7W vs. E40D Tranny

Which tranny would anyone suggest? Pros Cons of both? I have a 97 F-150 4.6L V8 with 4R7W auto Transmission 3:55 rear end w/towing package.

I have a small trailer and 4 wheeler and will be pulling fairly long distances. Some people have suggested getting a tranny cooler to be sure and keep things cooled. I think the towing package includes this - or some sort of modified transmission cooling system already?

All auto trannies have hose that connect to the radiator for cooling anyway, so what's the difference exactly between this and a tranny cooler? Will I be ok with my current setup and pulling a wheeler and a 2400 - 2600lb trailer? Just want to be sure - I'm a bit leary about auto trannies.

Any info would be great, Thanks!

hi and welcome to FTE

i have a 97 only with the 5.4 e4od.
the differance on the coolers is with the lines running into the rad. is that the coolant is hot , and with the tubing inside the hot fluid you are only lower the trans. fluid temp. to what your coolant temp. is.

with a external cooler, you can disapate the heat to the out side air plus when you are moving you have air flowing over the ext.cooler.

drawback is that it takes longer for the trans to warm up...but its not a big concern... i alway's let my truck warm up before i drive it.

my last truck was a 95 f150 4x4 5.0 e40d and i got 370,000 miles on the trans with no repair's and i drove that truck hard...and i'm doing the same thing this one, they both tow about 6-7000lbs about 1/3 of the time.
so far the e40d has proven it is a solid trans.

by the way my wife had a 94 e250 5.8 e4od and put 400,000 onit no problems 2 engines , she now has a 99 e250 bought it 90,000 last year, its just turned 200,000 , no issues onit either, hope this helps

forgot to say...the extrenal cooler sits in front of the a/c condenser behind your grill, its about 12" long by 4" and if it does not have one get one{it does come with the trailor/tow package}you'll be able to see it.

Ok, sweet, I think I found it. Looks like a little radiator and it sits almost right behind the front bumper in front of the radiator? That makes me feel better about pulling. You think I should be fine to pull a 2500lb trailer w/a 4 wheeler in the truck bed over fairly long distances w/o many probs.

yep if you don't drive as hard as i do .... the 4.6 is a good engine...up to about 4-5000lbs and i would not be afraid to push it beyond that....its a ford and underated...but just use common sense...when towing..and make sure you have proper tongue wieght..."no tail wagging the dog" if you know what i mean....

I have the E4OD in my '94 F-250 w/460. 87K so far and doing fine. I pull a 9K lb travel trailer. Last year was in Bakersfield, CA and it was 107 f, not a hint of trouble.

You would be fine pulling that without the tranny cooler, but it definitely will help. Your truck shouldn't even strain pulling that small of a load.

Found out I have the tranny cooler, it's included with the towing package. It's a little radiator type box that sits behind the front bumper infront of the radiator. I started pulling the other day and was very impressed with the results. That 4.6 does very well, I didn't think it would pull as good as it did for some reason - I underestimated the power of my FORD!!!!!

Thanks for all the comments/help!!!
