My back door broke. The hydraulic lifter fell off. and the plate that the lifter is welded to fell off too. "Anybody else having this problem".. Anybody have any experience fixing this??? Guess I'll have to get my dad to weld everything back up. The door doesn't shut right either.
Pre-95 models had a recall on this. It was for a replacement hings bracket because the old ones would break off. You might try your Ford dealer and see if yours is recalled or maybe they can get you a better replacement. I would think that a weld on body sheet metal might not be enough to support the weight of the liftgate...
Called Ford dealer no such recalls on mine. ......
I think I will def have to by a new hydraulic and weld the plate
back up and hopefully it will hold. As it is now, the door doesn't
even shut right.
Check the latch bolts for broken/missing strike bushings. There should be a plastic bushing over the bolt shaft that protrudes from the inside edge of the door frame. If it is missing, it will cause the door latch to not grab hold properly. You can purchase a bushing kit or the entire bolt/bushing assembly from most auto supply stores. Bushings kit is <$5, bolt& bushing is $5-7 each. Replace the entire bolt if it shows signs of wear on the shaft (safety first).

I got hit in the liftgate on my 1992 ford Explorer sport. The hit was just below the handle, not to bad to look at but now I can't open the gate or the window so I cant fix the dent!
any ideas on how to get the gate open?
