I have a 1992 F-250 4x4 with a 460 engine. I have been having problems with
it at idle running really rough and when it excelerates, excessive gas consumption along with having no power when towing, backing up and going over things (like large dirt mounds). I have installed all the necessary tune up parts that I can possibly think of. So i turn to you wonderful people to give me some opinions of what you may think the problem or problems are. All the input you can give me will help a bunch. Thanks again!!
it has 258,000 i believe. I thought about it being a timing issue. It luggs really bad when you put in reverse and when you get to about 35 mph it has a hard time getting up hills at 55mph. it starts out good and then just starts slowing down. It makes like a locamotive sound like there is no exaust either, when it idles and accelerates.
Ck. the exhaust back pressure,ck it before the cat. converter. Should read about 1.5 psi at 2000 rpm. I ck it when the engine is cold,so not to burn hands. I use an old style fuel pump test gauge the one that reads psi & vacuum. Drill 1/8 hole in pipe, you can hold hose up to pipe over test hole. While your helper revs.engine. Block wheels & set park brake before testing. You can plug hole with a small metal screw when finished. Test kits are available if you do'nt have a helper for a 1 man operation.
Well thanks for your insites everyone, i pulled off my cat. converter today and found to my surprise that my truck had more flow after removing it then it did with it attached and blowing through the tail pipes. Engine also ran a little better. Feel free to give me any input or other suggestions. I am hoping that is the problem. Thanks Again!!! Is there a possibilty that when you have a problem with you cat. converter that it tends to blow unburned fuel and oil out your tail pipe leaving the tail pipes black ?
I would bet the problem that is causing the unburned fuel and black pipes is what caused the cat to get plugged. At 258K miles, I would bet the rings are pretty shot and you've got a lot of blowby.
i would for check fuel prssure, fairly common for the fuel pressure regulator to fail and get excessive fuel pressure, causes vehicle to run rich, in turn poor performance/idle.
