Hi Guys, this past Saturday I wanted a louder exhaust, so I had my Flowmaster 40 taken out and a straight pipe welded in. I had a practically brand new set of glasspacks I was going to use, but the owner of the shop talked me out of it. The stock cats are still in place. The new sound isn't that much different, except when I rev it, it gives off a little pop. The guy told me if I wanted to change it, I could bring it back and he would weld in a y-pipe (it's just a single pipe now) and give me a dual set-up with a straight pipe after the cats. He mentioned that if I wanted true duals, I would have to purchase an aftermarket coverter from 2 into 1, to a 2 into 2 set-up, but that alone would set me back over $100, plus what ever he is going to charge me to do the work.
Basically I'm asking for opinions on what to do and should I take out one of the two catalytic converters. I live in a no-emission county, and even if they ever decide to put emissions, either 1, my truck will be too old to require it, and 2, I heard that you only really need one cat to pass.
I will first state that it is a federal offense to remove emissions equipment from your truck.
With that said, if you want to get any volume out of your truck, you're going to have to remove at least one of the cats, if not both. It is highly unlikely that the shop will cut a catalytic converter off for you without having one to replace it. I know none of the shops here will do it.
I also live in an area where they don't do emissions checks. I don't have a cat on my truck, or any of the emissions equipment for that matter, but I am aware that if I was pulled over and checked, there will be some kind of consequences. Luckily my truck hardly ever goes more than 20 miles away if I use it for anything.
I would consider a new high flow y-pipe and a new high flow cat. Should be perfectly fine for emission/inspections and will help give you a nice sound.
if your state dsent do emmissions, cut that puppy off, but i live in florida where they think emmissions checks are useless thank the lord. get ride of that cat and out that flowmaster back on and you'll love it. if you want loud get some longtube headers and it will get much louder with better mpgs and power. ive never heard of anyone ever getting poulled over or busted for not having cats on their vehicle, then again im in florida
