I was thinking about replacing my jbl head unit with an aftermarket unit because my cd player broke. i've heard that you must bypass the original amp. has anyone done this? do you lose/gain power/sound quality. will a new unit still power all the speakers or is a seperate amp needed?
Sure you can. You can ask for the amp-bypass plug when you get a wiring harness for the new head unit, if it doesnt already come with one. A simple job, not much harder than replacing the cd player.
Sound quality will probably be much better. I have not heard a stock Ford amp that can match SQ with a quality head unit.
Not sure what kind of stock system you have, but the aftermarket deck should power all the speakers just fine, probably with more power than the stock amp.
