Well, to answer one question....no, it doesn't have to be replaced with the same amp. Connections, however, are more difficult, in that I'm not aware of any non-OEM manufacturer who has a direct replacement.
If you are replacing it because it's bad, then I suggest looking at Ebay. I just saw a replacement JBL amp listed.
If you are replacing it with a new/more powerful amp, I suggest you save yourself the frustration and buy it from a car audio place. They will often replace yours for a reasonable fee. There is a lot of competition in that business, and you should be able to get them to cut you a price break, if you buy from them.
My experience is that while I can do the work, myself. It's often more valuable to me to pay the fee, than to take time away from my day.....and particularly if I'm working overtime.
I don't think Chilton or Haynes manuals cover too much. If it's your sub-woofer amp, I believe it's back behind the passenger side panel in the rear compartment. That means removing those panels to gain access.
