Disabled check engine light

Disabled check engine light
To make a long story short the previous owner of my 1996 truck disabled the check engine light to hide a potentially expensive problem then sold it to me. I heard this was illegal. Is there something I can do?

This depends on the state you live in.. In ohio yes you could sue him over it.... I have the links somewhere. It would be considered tampering with the ECU, which is illegal in the state of ohio. Not sure about the other states tho.

If he deliberately did something to hide a problem with the car to be able to get a higher price for it, it is FRAUD no matter what state you live in. Call a good lawyer. If you can prove that the light was disabled I think you have a case.
