hi all i need info on my 1999 mazda b3000 with 3.0 L 4x4 with automatic transmission.i just got back from a trip and had to end up towing a u-haul weighing about 1500 lbs.while i was driving my kid flipped my 4x4 switch into 4x4 high.while i was towing and i switched back to 2wd as fast as humanly possible.i started having problems with the truck, my speedometer started fluctuating i stopped the truck and restarted it and everything seemed o.k. then i went out to go to work and now the speedometer want read at all,my abs light is staying on and my overdrive light is blinking on and off,it is also shifting horribly like the transmission doesn't want to shift gears.
i would appreciate any help,
mr mazda
It sounds like a failure of the vehicle speed sensor that is located on top of the rear axle. That provides input to the speedometer, cruise control, ABS and transmission. Easy to change, a two wire connector and one bolt retainer hold down.
did shifting to 4 wheel drive while towing cause it to go out?
Probably not. I am not a big believer in coincedences, but the first thing to check is the VSS. It may have failed at the same time (or close to it). Your problem sounds like a VSS. Keep us posted.
i found out the 1999 mazda b3000 does not have a vehicle speed sensor the vss is only on 1997 and earlier models, but there is some sort of sensor there what is it?
any help would be appreciated.
my haynes book, the way they make it out is that it is a speed sensor.it's wasn't classified as a vss.i found out from the parts guy at the mazda place he
said that the 99 mazda has two speed sensors on the front at each tire or around there and one on the back at the case.i did do as you suggested and took the sensor out and took the part to mazda and got the right one(and it was a pain to get out, well for me anyway)i replaced the one i got and it runs like a champ.i want to thank you guys for the help all of you.i really appreciate it.yall were right thank you very much.
