I have a 1980 F250 4x4 with a blown I6 (I posted about it earlier this week). I found another engine, in a 1976 F100. I was cautioned to make sure it's a 300 and not a 240...question I have is...how do I tell? Apparently the engine is the same on the outside with only a crankshaft difference. The seller didn't know when I asked him about it. I have a real potential at this point for a creek ride sans paddle.
according to the chilton i have, the only inline six available in 76 was the 300...so you should be safe...if you can...look at the VIN on the 76...if the 8th digit is a "B", you have a 300-6...if it is an H, Y, or A, the six is not the stock motor...but i'm thinking that it would be, due to the fact that it's a 1/2 ton truck...good luck...
...I don't know if the thing has the original engine in it, so it may conceivably be a 240...is there a way to positively ID it visually? The VIN code is B, it's from a 76, but who knows? I know who HAS to know, and it's me, and before I try to install it with my three rusty spanners and my Wal-Mart 101 piece socket set.
the motors are physically the same.. there should be some numbers on it... I've never even seen a 240, but if you goto www.fordsix.com, they'll have a lot more info on older sixes.
