98 Sport with auto 4x4 transfer case grunts under normal conditions

My 98 Sport's 4x4 auto transfer case grunts and moans (like clutches are engaging and dis-engaging)when i accelerate on dry pavement.

Anyone else have this problem?

Yes mine does. It's a 98 Sport just like yours. The computer holds
the transfer case clutch "close" to the engagement point when
accel hard even on dry pavement. The computer is programmed to do
this so if actual engagement is needed it will happen quickly.
I changed the transfer case fluid to Mercon V synthetic and know
the noise is hardly noticed. You might also go to the dealer and
have the GEM module reprogrammed and this will solve your problem.

Thanks for the response...Does yours make alot of groaning and moanings sounds in the snow?

My wife always says 'what was that?' everytime the front wheels lock in...seems to make too much noise for my liking. Maybe the transfer case fluid will help.

Thanks again...

Dont know yet, we havent had snow since I changed the fluid.
But under normal conditions it is very quiet. Also consider the
reprogramming, the dealer can do it for you.

Keep me posted
