I know it was posted a while ago, but I couldn't find it.....Just purchased a performer rpm.....Gasket recomended by Edlelbrock is the Felpro print O seal....Does the regular "blue" gasket work...Thats what comes in the full gasket set I purchased....Hate to buy another set if I dont have to, because Im cheap...er...Frugal......D44hd
my fel-pros lasted me 3 days, mr. gasket lasted 4 days, now i have a different set of fel-pros, and i havent got it back togather to se how long they will last, my buddy with a t-bird 390 had the same fel-pro gasket i had that lasted me 3 days and it has lasted him many many miles, i guess its just how good they seal, this time im useing coppertone spray-a-gasket to see if it will help seal them.
After three failures of the Edel-recommended #1247 Fel-Pro Printoseal, I just used the regular gasket with the steel reinforcement sandwiched in. It's been good for about 10K miles now. Some of the "big boys" on the FE forum recommend the Mr. Gasket #202A as the best, and others use a Victor, can't recollect the #. But it seems like more people have trouble with the Printoseal than not, kind of a smack upside the head when you look at the premium price. Steve
in my opinion the Mr. Gasket 202A is junk like i said it lasted me 4 days, i havnt had good luck with the MR. Gasket gasket set, ive had the intake, header and t-stat houseing gasket blow out all within 1 week.
I dnot know fordman....maybe you need a new mechaninc........lol Just kidding.
I understand where you are commin from I have never had a set of gaskets last long enough. Ive been useing standard fel-pro for a while and they work good most of the time but in the end they usually end up leaking. I have considdered having the block and heads resurfaced to remedy the problem.
i dont think ive ever re-torqued 3 or 4 times after i put them on. I do it once then twice and it done. I dont even use header gaskets never needed any I bought some 100 flowtech headers bolted them up just like the originals metal on metal and never had a leak.....now the flange on the otherhand i think ive replaced 3 since 1998 maybe 4.
I've been in and out of my motor several times since I started this truck project, and I've rarely had gasket problems. Make sure your surfaces are clean, smooth and flat! I've had plenty of other problems....
I only used sealer on the intake gaskets at the water ports. Never mind the torque specs. If you think it needs more to seal, go a little tighter. (this approach not reccomended for the valve covers ;-)
I would not use the copper sealer anywhere except the exhaust.
I've had the 1247s on a 390 and on the 446 with know observed problems. Granted, neither had high mileage.
I haven't had any problems either. I retorque after each heat cycle for the first couple of times. This just seems to work for me. I was told to do this by a guy that knows what he is doing.
