Cool Hub Assembly Help!

My right front hub assmebly needed to be replaced on my 99 F250 Super duty, a day later the ABS light come on and shortly after the Speedometer stopped working. The garage said that they are not connected. I'm convinced that they are. Anyone out there have a clue? By the way my 4x4 hubs haven't worked since I bought the truck brand new in 99. Thanks

Red face ABS light connected with hub replacement

uh oh, am i asking a hard question? Bear with me guys, I absolutely love my truck. I have to rely on a small town garage to fix it. Not much money in my pocket and the dealers have never been able to fix it, so I have no one to turn to when it comes to my beloved!

Sounds like the typical speed sensor in the rear. There is a sensor on the top(?) of the rear end that does the rear ABS and the speedo. The ABS light comes on first, then the speedo goes (so I've heard).

It's 99% likely it is NOT related to the hub replacement

On my 2002..... If my memory serves me right, there are three ABS sensors. One on the rear diff., and one on each front tire. Hence 4-wheel-ABS. I disconnected my rear sensor (just to see what it would do) and my speedo kept working but my ABS light was on. So I'm figuring it can get the speed off of the front sensors as well. So I'm feeling it could have something to do with it.

Call me crazy, but If I bought a 4x4 that didn't have 4x4... I think I would've had it fixed under warranty...

We had a thread on this going on the other day, and you might be right in that the front sensors have something to do with this.

GET THE CODE read from the ABS!

One thing, there's a different between "4-wheel" abs and "4-channel" abs. The SD has three-channel (only three sensors). My '96/97 t-bird/cougar have real four-channel. On the SD if only one brake locks up in the rear, the ABS will start pulsing both rear wheels.

Do the hubs work if you turn them in manually?
If not, swap them out for a good 'ol set of manual Warns or the like. You'll loose the auto operation(if you have it) but, gain large amounts of reliability.

to hediann, there are many reasons that the hubs won't work. if they work in manual you probably have a vacuum problem, not to worry that is easy to fix also, like i said i've had that problem.

No, the manual hubs and the interior switch does not work. When driving the 4x4 light on instrument panel flashes on and off. The dealers replaced the GEM module several times saying that was the problem. Now I've hear that the windhshield needs to be replaced because water leaks on the GEM. Then I was told to just replace the manual hubs with Wagner and all would be well and forget about the vacuum control. Who knows? It is so very frustrating because of the money involved to try and figure it out and the truch isn't worth a damn without 4 wheel drive. Sorry it took so long for me to get back with you guys, I really appreciate your help. Heidi

If you manually lock both hubs, put the switch into 4x4 HIGH and it doesn't work, the transfer case servo isn't working...

I currently have the left hub not engaging about 20% of the time... so I know where you'
re coming from

HeidiAnn,
Had my SD 4x4 since 2001 and was ready to shoot truck. Always had problems with my front hubs and 4wd. Finally got a clicking in front end when I turned a corner right or left. My service advisor, who is a champ had the mechanics take of the front hubs and we found out the left front 4x4 hub was sticking or stuck. I always wondered about the gas mileage. He then explains to me after questions about my 4X4 driving if I waited for 15seconds or backed up to get front drive out of 4X4.

I explained to him that I followed the manual to the unth degree, and he explained to me that was not enough. When I 4 wheel and take it out I need to stop take it out and wait 15seconds so the vacuum has time to release the gears and for safety sake back up to help the gears release.
I now think I have a new truck after they replaced the front left hub and the front end is now free. Improved my gas mileage about 2mpg and feels great to drive.
I am wondering if I can replace the auto front hubs with manual ones so this problem goes away for ever.

Hope this helps,
fknipfer1

Front hubs

Your description sounds just like what is happening on my 2000 4x4. How much did they charge to replace the hub?

toy can change the hub yourself in about 2 minutes they run 100-120 perhub at the dealer. you can buy warn hubs at napa for 160 per set they take a little more work to install 7 minutes per side.
