I have a '95 Explorer and I need to get the codes out of it. It has a 16 port connection under the dash which I assume is the code reader port. It doesn't have the 3/4 prong connector(EECIV) under the hood that the earlier explorers have. I borrowed an OBDII scanner, but the code comes up '8888', which according to the scanner manual means I'm not getting any signals. I've heard that the '95 was a transition year for Ford and that the connection I have on the truck may not be OBDII compliant. This would mean that I need a different scanner that most likely will only work on this year vehicle. Also, the factory sticker under the hood says it meets emissions standards, but does not mention OBDII, OBDI, EECIV, or EECV. Some people I've talked to say that the sticker should tell me. That's not true in my case. I'd appreciate any and all advice. Thanks in advance..
Although I am not familiar with this engine, it is my understanding that in the 95 the "OBD-II" connector was only for the Ford non engine diagnostics and that this engine was still OBD-I
95 is a transition year it can have both connectors but if it only has the one then it should work on any OBD II scanner. The connector should have a hot wire in run you could check if not maybe the fuse is blown and thats why you scanne isn't working. I would also check real good under the hood if has a connector out there should either be beside fuse box or on pass side next to the heater box.
I have a 95 explorer, the diagnostic link is on the front-side
of the power distribution box under the hood driver-side fender.
6-pin connector with one independent lead(this is not considered
an "OBD-II" system). You can use either a analog voltmeter or the
check engine light itself and jumper wire. This system has a built
in self-test system.
