Chock the wheels and keep the ignition key in your pocket, get under the truck and have someone in the cab move the shift lever around. You should see where the play is coming from. If the truck is too low to get under, raise one or both ends (either ramps or jack stands or a combination).
Aftermarket shifters are similar in design but different in execution - there really is no way for me to tell you specifically what needs done without seeing your setup.
By the way, I am deadly serious about the wheel chocks and keys. Personal experience.
I found out what the problem was he installed it wrong fun fun fun now it is in the proper spot the thing still pops out of gear once in a while though?
... the thing still pops out of gear once in a while though?
Possibly the linkage is not adjusted correctly which keeps it from going fully into gear. Also possibly synchronizer problems in the gear or gears it pops out of.
Adjustment of the linkage has to do with getting it all the way into gear. Without seeing your specific unit I cannot tell you how to adjust the linkage. Do you happen to live anywhere near Cincinnati, Ohio? If so, I would be more than happy to have a look at it for you.
The synchronizer is an internal part of the transmission, if that is the problem it is time for a transmission shop. I would try looking at the aftermarket linkage you have and see if there are any adjustments. Fiddle with them and see if you can get it to work better.
