Exhaust Temp with Superchips

Will using the Superchips in the lowest mode increase my exhaust temp while towing a 12,000lb 5th wheel? I have a stock exhaust. If the temp increases is it dangerous?

The lowest setting is for towing, it will be OK.
Yes your EGTs will increase a bit. Do you have an EGT gauge

I might suggest you go to this thread and read, read, read,..............great stuff and tons of info.

I'm new to everything on this truck. No I don't have a gauge, do I need one if I buy the Superchips? When I'm not hauling my 5th wheel will I need to worry about exhaust temp? I've been reading some of the thread you suggested, but alot of it is way over my head.

The recommendations you will get will say yes to guages. Definately if you are towing. You will read where some have great egts with the superchip and it never gets close to the limit (both empty and towing). Others, have gotten pretty close to the limit and had to back off. Every truck is different, and if yours tends to run hotter, you will never know without guages and therefore may cause damage. A lot also depends on your driving habits, so to save you from reading 20 plus pages of stuff, yes I would get guages.

Now, onto what kind of guages:

Pyro: Measures your Exhaust temps (EGT)
Trans: Measures your trans temp
Boost: Measures your Turbo

Yes, get all three since you tow a 5th wheel.

Tim will be here shortly to refer you to Motorhaven to purchase the guages and pod.

your diesel motor needs to be monitored with gauges when its chipped and towing ..If you get your temps to high your going to melt somthing....gauges are cheap compaired to a new motor

Can't comment on the Superchips tuner, but extra fuel/power = higher exhaust temp...

An EGT gauge is 'not only' suggested by the tuner manufacturer, but very cheap insurance when running any performance/power tune.. Although, I ran mine (all stock) quite a bit with a Predator, 65 HP tune with no EGT gauge (gauged now) and the temps were 'OK' for everyday driving, as well as light load/moderate towing .. I'm sure the Superchips exhaust temps are comparable.. Haven't had a substantial load/tow yet though.. But towing a 12,000lb load with any power increase, I'd personally want to know for sure.. Not to say it would'nt do OK.. If the exhaust temps climb to high, for an extended amount of time it will/can damage the turbo or worse.. You don't want to have an oil pan full of 'piston stew'!! With a gauge, there is less to worry about, and it/they will protect your investment.. (my opinion)

There are variables that cause higher exhaust temps as well, like high altitude/grades, and high ambient/outside temps, and of course the load itself..

Plus...if you enjoy the lower HP increases, you can feel secure to 'bump'
it up a notch!!!!
