Does anyone know of a website that gives any information and specs on rebuilding the A4LD auto transmission? I just lost the tranny in my 92 explorer 4x4 and want to know if it is a simple procedure to rebuild one and what tools I would need. On a second note, would you know of anywhere I could find a rebuild kit for it as well?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 10:08 AM (EST)]It is fairly easy to rebuild. If you don't remove the pump, then no alignment tools are necessary. You need a clutch compressor but these are eady to make. Parts available at bulkpart.com, for about $100 you get clutches, steels, seals, gasket, and a manual. Did you loose the overdrive? If so, you don't have to do everything and it could take as little as an hour to fix. This is the best kept secret there is!
You're not alone, I'm awaiting the manual as my 1991 Explorer is up on stands. Check out the post that Opera House mentions. It has a lot of good information about rebuilding the A4LD. Mine was rebuilt a little over a year ago and I lost all the forward gears. Opera suggested checking the valve body first so that's what I'm going to do before trying to tear it down. Another site you may want to check for parts is netgearhead.com.
I am wondering if i need to rebuild my tranny? I got the truck in April with 69k miles on it.I took it back to the dealer because it had what they call a shutter, and they flushed it with a wynn's flush..Now at 85k miles.Yesterday it started not to shutter but going uphill at about 45.It would seem like the truck was puttering (on and off -no stalling)but when the tranny down shifted it would stop and ride ok..Another thing it has been doing is when driving in town say at 30mph. I will let off the gas for a second to slow down to a car pulling out. Then when i step back on the gas to get going it would kinda kick and sometimes i would hear a clucnk when it idd so..However the dealer said the tranny was ok..It is under warrenty till 93k miles....Thankyou
Turned out to be a bad #4 plug that only had 4K in it. Seems I have an intake manifold leak that is causing the plug to get a coating on it. Remember that the DIS ignition system puts two plugs in series and that requires a lot more voltage than previous ignition systems. Lower engine rpm at high loads requires higher spark voltage. A lot of strange things can happen to the electrical system under those conditions.
I posted above about my tranny and thought it was messed up,However yesterday my engine light came on and it was missfires in cylinder 4.I just had new wires and plugs put in a few months ago too..Where would plug 4 be?
Yes it is the V8 so i take it would be the plug way in the back that is hard to get to on the passengers side..I was hoping it was the 3rd one back because it is easy to get to and with a flashlight pointed on the tip i could see a greenish tint..I bet i have to take the plug out to see if the oil is leaking in their.I cant see why it would just go after new parts like 4 months ago.The boot did come off easily so it wasn't stuck on.,However the mechanic that did the job said the old ones were welded together.Thanx
