A4LD Transmission slippage
A4LD Transmission slippage
I have a 1991 Explorer 4x4 with the A4LD automatic. I was wondering if anyone knows of any service manual about or instructions on adjusting the bands. My transmission is slipping slightly when up shifting but once engaged fully it goes no problem. It is just a little sluggish and soft on the shifts. Any information will be quite appreciated. I forgot to mention that i just did a fluid and filter change on it as well.

Adjusting the bands is pretty easy. You'll need a torque wrench that is accurate down to 10 ft-lbs. You loosen the adjuster lock nut (the manual says replace the old lock nut with a new one), tighten the adjusting screw to 10 ft-lbs, then back off the adjuster exactly 3.5 turns for the overdrive band and exactly 2 turns for the intermediate band. Tighten each lock nut to 35-45 ft-lbs and you're done.
Slippage can be caused by a handful of things so it would be best to get your hands on a manual. Try your local library, the ones in the Seattle area have the factory service manuals which are pretty good.
