I was wondering if a 72 ford crew cab 1 ton be worth messing with. It has a 390 granny 4 speed factory air with 80,000 miles. I was wanting to convert it to a short fleet side bed. And also convert the ton into a 1/2 ton. It is worth getting.
The 1 ton is the only crew cab I have found around where I live. Are the crew cab 1 tons rare. I can get the complete truck (with three freeze plugs pushed out of the 390) for $600. The interion looks nice with all wood grain, the truck was last driven 2 years ago from the freeze plugs. On the fenders it just says "custom cab". The vin has f3, and has dual wheels, with flat bed. Reason to convert to 1/2 ton, is to make a harley davidson conversion truck

Reason: convert
What's a "harley davidson conversion truck"? Couldn't be better than the 1 ton. Why are the freeze plugs popped? Hopefully the block is still good. FE motors and parts are not inexpensive like bowties. However, FE motors are plentiful at the boneyards. Any pics?
Without the engine actually running, you don't know if you're getting a good deal or a 700# boat anchor. Freeze plugs being out is not a good sign no matter what seller is telling you.
Can not agree with your down sizing idea, will cost you far more in the long run. You want a half ton, keep looking, they're out there, or do you're makeover to a 1 ton.
hey barcoll7, i like the idea of a harly conversion, but make better on it and make a onetone dually, with airbegs,u know, better the harly truck(if possible)
Yes, crewcabs are rare and the truck is worth far more than $600 just in parts or as a vehicle with a blown motor. So, buy it. At the worse you could put it on E-BAY and surely sell it for $1000+.
Thanks for all the input, I bought the truck yesterday and had offers before I got it home. The body is in great condition, the 390 started and pulled around to hook it to the tow bar. All i see is the freeze plugs are pushed out. I've checked out the conversion, and in all of the work, I'm staying with the ton setup. Could anyone tell me about the rear ends in the 1 ton. I measured the outer wheels and they are the same width as a 1/2 ton rear end. Will a regular long bed fit with the dual wheels with out outer finders.
(I know you will have to cut out and widen the inner finders.)
Congrats on your purchase! These are great trucks. I just bought a '72 F350 crew cab, about 2 weeks ago myself. It has the long bed on it, so you should be able to put one on yours. You'll need to check your wheelbase length. It should be on your door tag provided the door hasen't been previously replaced. You should be at 165" for the crew cab with the long bed. The rear axle for most early F350's is a dana /spicer 70 series. You can confirm this by looking at the webbing coming off the center section of the axle housing. There should be the 70 cast onto one of the webs. Take a look in the back of the rear seat-back (in the springs), in your truck. You may be lucky enough to find the original build sheet. Thats where I found mine anyway. Great info about what the truck came with originally. Regards,
