anything can be done if you set your mind to it, first i would pull your truck up next to a 4x4 of same year and start looking thins over to get a feel for all that you may be taking on, i don't know what you may feel comfortable doing, but i have had thoughts of doing the same thing and decided to just get a 4x4 and start form there, if you are creative, i would begin looking for a "donor" truck if you decide to go ahead.

i took a 1990 f-350 front axle dana 60 and put it on a 1985 2wd. you need the sping hangers on the 4wd. i used a torch with a good tip and just cut the frame up to save hangers. then i ground all the rivets and punched them out. measure and mark the holes out on the 2wd once you take out the front independent. i has some holes already there. you will have to notch frame for front spring hangers. they ride on inside up into the frame. have some good tools like torch, grider, saws all and good sharp drill bits when you go to install. it took me a good day to remove and clean up stuff for install on my truck. and another full day to remove independent form truck and lay it all out. used railroad ties to support frame and get it up high enough to work on. you also need shock mount towers off f-350 and you have to grind out rivets on indepndent front and knock the off. its really no that hard. its a little time consuming but it was worth it. plus i got a pretty fair buy on the running gear. sterring hooks right up use the f-350 stuff.
