Iam getting ready to put a 390 into a 74' F250 4by and was wondering which should I go with because I already have two 2bbl intakes and carbs but I can get a 4bbl intake for $40 and a 4bbl holley for $100 I have to money to buy them but I dont know which I should do. It will be my daily driver for awhile and it will see alot of back roads I need it to get fair gas milage and it has 4:10 gears and a 4spd. What do yall think?
thanks
Matt
Get the 4 barrel and put the heavy spring in the secondaries. Most of the time it'll be just a two barrel, if you really slam it, like if you have to pass, the secondaries will kick in... giving you more power (using more fuel), other wise, it'll be just like a 2 barrel.
One other thing, the primaries on a 4bbl carb, even a square-bore, are smaller than a stock 2bbl's venturies. This will get higher velocity through the carb into the intake, getting you MORE bottom end then the stock 2bbl (all other things being equal). It also helps the fuel/air mix. For a 4x4, it'll certainly help. And, like everyone said, better mileage.
I took a stock 360 w/2bbl with over 100K miles, put a Holley on it with an 4-to-2 adapter (yeah, I know, but it was free), and got BETTER bottom end and raised the peak torque up the RPM curve. I would imagine putting a 4bbl intake on would have only made it better.
i would go with the 4 barrel also, the primaries of the 4 barrel are smaller then the ones of a 2 barrel, results better gas milage. also you would already have the 4 barrel if you did any type of build up on the motor. good luck
