P1443

Hi everyone, new member here.

I've done some reading of other threads here related to the OBD II code P1443 and have found the threads very useful. However I'm still very confused with all this.

I have a 1997 Ford Ranger and my Check Engine Light came on a while back. So I eventually bought a scan tool and I'm only getting one code which is P1443. I've looked at both my Chilton and Haynes Manuals, my Ranger manual itself which is pretty useless for this problem, and I've been searching the internet like crazy.

From the threads I have read here it doesn't seem like a hard problem to fix yourself, and it seems like if you take it in anywhere they will charge you an arm and a leg to work on the EVAP system but it's an affordable do it yourself project.

I just don't know where to begin though, I see people talking about buying the complete set with hoses and the canister and sensor all together but I can't find all these parts.

Can someone help me out with this? Where do I begin to repair the EVAP system?

My 95 set the same code and I replaced the purge valve and the thermistor. The problem went away. Take the canister off (easy job) and inspect it for damage or leaks. It should be obvious if that is the problem. Check all the vacuum hoses and electrical connectors. You might try a vacuum guage on the system before taking it all off to see if maybe there is a leak.

Thanks for the response!!

I found a place that sells the canister but which hoses do I get if they need to be replaced? That is one of the things I'm kind of confused on.

I figure even if they look OK I might as well replace them anyway.

Hi. I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses on here. I too had a P1443 check engine light on my 1996 Ford Ranger. I tried to replace just the purge valve sensor, but the hoses were too gummed up to do it. I ended up buying the purge valve "kit" that had the hoses already attached to the sensor and solenoid. Kind of tricky getting the old hose out and getting the new hose connected, but I did it with perseverance. So far, so good, no check engine light. This is the 2nd time this forum has helped me solve a CEL . Thanks again!! I appreciate this great resource.

Glad to see someone brought up my old post. Believe it or not I still haven't attempted to fix my purge valve problem. I've had the check engine light on for months now. Luckily I'm not due for a smog check until next year cause from what I've read you won't pass the inspection if you ignore this problem.

Anyhow I really want to get around to fixing this. I know what I need to do but I still have not had anyone answer me as to where do you find this purge valve kit? I'm able to locate some individual parts for this repair but it seems as if everyone buys the kit and it's easier and affordable that way. Please someone let me know where I can find the purge valve kit, I have a 97 Ranger and this is to fix the P1443 fault code. Thanks!!

Pretty sure the Kit is a Ford-only part, and that you have to get it from the dealer. There are different part numbers depending on which engine you have, you can find that information here:

Purge Valve Kit

Hi Everyone.

I bought my purge valve kit at Ford directly. I hated to do it, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere else. It cost about 84 bucks I believe. I had tried to just swap out the purge valve sensor, but it is really difficult to keep the hoses intact while trying to get them off of the sensor, especially after having them on for about 8 years (I have a 1996). I figured I would go ahead and get the kit and replace everything, assuring that the new hoses are fit snug to the sensor and the solenoid. The only difficulty I had replacing the parts using the kit is connecting the hose to the intake manifold (it is inconveniently placed under stuff) and snaking the tubing around things to the intake manifold. Other than that it was a piece of cake, mainly just connecting hose to the charcoal canister and re-connecting wire harnesses. I am a complete newbie at doing anything under the hood. If I can successfully replace this stuff anyone can. Thanks again to everyone who posted information on this site.

i think you mean 'arrow' ? i believe that should point towards the gas tank...
the rear of the vehicle not towards the canister.

i checked my setup. my flow valve and solenoid don't have any arrows on them. they are attached in line with the connection from the intake. the solenoid is closest to the the charcoal canister and that line goes into the top connection on the canister. the bottom line from the canister goes back to the gas tank. hope this helps. if you don't have a code then all should be good.
