Well, i think the 2 main ideas behind leaving your diesel idling are to lower the egt ( exhaust gas tempuretures ) and to reduce start-up wear ( glo-plugs, starter, battery, alternator). Lets say you are pulling a tralor for 2 hours, you should let your diesel idle for 10 minutes for the egt's to go down, that way you do not ruin an engine. Plus it takes a lot of effert to turn a 17.5:1 engine.
