truck lost power, then died going down the road... wierd...

Went to go to the store tonight... hopped in the truck and fired it up and noticed it seemed to run a little rough, almost like a miss... I've noticed this for a couple weeks now ever since I replaced the GPR... once it gets warmed up (it's about 40* when this happens), this goes away. So I jumped in, started it up, and headed to the store. Ran fine for about a mile, then all of a sudden it had a massive loss of power, just like if you were to try and start out in 4th from a stop. The more I presed the pedal, the worse it bogged down. I let off the gas, hit the clutch, and it died instantly. (Now I'm stuck in the road, cause I couldn't coast up the hill to te nearest parking lot) Tried cranking and it started, but was still super bogged down. It would fire off, then just die. Finally got it to run enough to crawl up the hill and into the prking lot, and as soon as I hit the clutch, it died again. Sat and cranked it HARD for about 5 minutes (about 15 second bursts with a 30 second pause in between), and it would crank, RPM's would jump, but didn't fire. At first I thought it was a fuel stoppage or something, but after the first minute of cranking I could smell the diesel in the exhaust, almost like it was flooded. Finally after cycling the GP's a couple times, I got it to crank back up. Still sluggish, but it staed running this time. Let it sit there idling till it warmed up and it cleared itself up... drove it back home like nothing happened.

At first I was thinking fuel stoppage... like maybe some diesel gelled in the line and clogged it, then the cranking worked it out. What makes me think that's not the case is that it drove fine once warm... that's what makes me think electrical.... but I'm still a novice, so I'm not really sure...I don't have a scanner or anyting to get codes, and it didn't throw a CEL or anything...

What do you guys think? Electrical? Fuel? Any suggestions for troubleshooting? Things to check? (I'm not too familiar with locations of parts under the hood, so if you have pictures they would be very helpful)

Thanks in advance you guys!

I'm thinking fuel all day long. I'd check fuel psi when it's doing this.

Well I went out and pulled the fuel filter and it's not too bad, but I'll probably replace that... fired it up and it seems like it's missing, but no dying or bogging down... LOTS of white smoke! I'm thinkin I have a few bad GP's... I don't have a gauge or anything to test fuel PSI, so where should I start lookin for the problem now?

Check your VC wiring harnesses. Sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere to me... Could be a fuel filter too though. That is how mine acted when I had a plugged filter a couple months ago. Although it didn't feel like it was missing, it just felt like it bogged out whenever you pushed it to go...

Just checked the oil level and it was low (barely on the dipstick) so I added a couple quarts and ran it again and it still does it a little, but not near as bad... coincidence maybe?

Probably not a coincidence. Top it up and I'll bet you're up and running again.

Maybe it just didn't have enough oil pressure to push the injectors like they should be, so they were only givin it enough to keep it runnin but not powerful?

Maybe low enough to where when you went up the hill it was picking up oil and air?

Maybe... but in the parking lot it was flat ground... maybe it just needed to flush itself though... I'll add some more oil and see I guess...
